Parks & Recreation Areas

Freetown is home to a number of parks for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike. Most parks are open from sunrise to sunset.

Parks

  Bandstand Park
South Main Street, Assonet

The bandstand in Assonet was built along the Assonet River on the site of the former Green Dragon Tavern. Built by a WPA laborer during the Great Depression, it was intended in part to replace the stage that was lost when the tavern was demolished.

The bandstand is a well-recognized part of the town's landscape. It's home to evening concerts by local music groups during the summer, which often serve as fundraisers for various local organization. The Tuesday Club of Assonet's annual Strawberry Festival is held at the bandstand each year on Father's Day. The town Christmas tree is proudly decorated and displayed at the bandstand each December.

  Central Park
Memorial Drive, East Freetown

Central Park began in the late 1980s as a single baseball field, Memorial Field, dedicated to former police chief Norman Allison. In the early 21st century, a cadre of volunteers developed the site into a multi-field complex with basketball courts and a walking loop trail.

Central Park has quickly become a popular recreation area in town.

  Freetown State Forest
Slab Bridge Road, Assonet

The Freetown State Forest sits on just less than 5,500 acres in Assonet and Fall River. Over 200 acres comprise the Watuppa Reservation, belonging to the local Wamapanoags. Also within the state forest is Profile Rock (pictured to the left), a granite outcropping which is said to resemble Massasoit.

The state forest is filled with trails for walking, horseback riding, and off-road vehicles. Picnic areas, a wading pool, and restrooms are also on-site. A statue to commemorate the Civilian Conservation Corps, partly responsible for the establishment of the state forest, is a recent addition.

State Forest HQ is located on Slab Bridge Road in Assonet, about 1¼ miles from the Assonet Four Corners. Their telephone number is 644-5522.

  Hathaway Park
Water Street, Assonet

Once the property of the Hathaway family, this park on the banks of the Assonet River features a playground and plenty of open space to run, walk, or start up a baseball game. The park is also home to the annual Independence Day fireworks faire.

  Memorial Park
Memorial Drive, East Freetown

Memorial Park is a tribute to the men and women of town who have served in the protection of their community, both at home and abroad. The centerpiece of the park is a Vietnam-era Cobra helicopter.

  Porter's Shore
Gramp Deane Road, Assonet

Over 10 acres of wooded conservation land on the shore of Assonet Bay provide ample space for hiking, walking, and picnicking. A single lane dirt road provides access from Gramp Dean Road to the bay for vehicles carrying canoes or other small watercraft. Fishing and swimming are popular summertime passtimes.

The Tisdale Burying Ground, a Revolutionary War-era cemetery, is also located atop a hill on the property.

  Rezendes Baseball Complex
Narrows Road, Assonet

Five baseball, softball, and t-ball fields on a quiet, residential street were formerly the home to the Assonet Youth Sports Association, and are now used by the new Freetown Youth Athletic Association. A small forest and pond sit just to the east of the ballfields. Ruins of the former Crystal Springs Bleachery fill the forest.

  Town Beach
Long Pond Road, East Freetown

First open to the public in 1967, the Town Beach in East Freetown provides a quiet spot on a shallow piece of Long Pond to relax, read a book, or bring the kids for those first tries at swimming. West of the beach, a set of baseball fields provide entertainment in the spring and summer months.

  World War I Memorial
Assonet Four Corners

The town's memorial to World War I is located on the corner of Elm and North Main streets in the heart of Assonet. It is decorated each year for Memorial and Veterans' days.

  World War II Memorial
Freetown Elementary School

The town's memorial to World War II is located next to the original wing of the Freetown Elementary School, which was built in 1949 as a major postwar project of the town. It is decorated each year for Memorial and Veterans' days.
